Placement Guidelines

Placement Guidelines

TOURNAMENT RECORDS DO NOT HAVE ANY BEARING ON PLACEMENT. However, pool seeds play a role in the case of an incomplete event.

In order to win a tournament you need to be the last team remaining. It is absolutely possible to go 0-3 in pool play and win an event. Your pool record determines your bracket seed, nothing else.

PLACEMENT IS NOT FINAL UNTIL AFTER THE WEEKEND IS OVER AND IT HAS BEEN ENTERED BY THE DIRECTOR!

Completed event:

  1. 1st and 2nd are awarded accordingly
  2. For all other places (I.e, 3rd/4th, 5th through 8th, etc.) placement is awarded according to the score of your game.
    • If you are in a quarterfinal game, there are 8 teams remaining. 4 will advance. The 4 remaining teams are ranked according to their score. Whoever gives up the most runs will finish in 8th, and whoever gives up the least amount of runs will finish 5th
    • In the event where 2 teams give up the same amount of runs (I.e., scores are 11-6 and 11-2) the team who scored more runs will be awarded a higher finish.

Incomplete event:

  1. All completed games will be taken into account
  2. 3 Full innings is a complete game in the event of weather shortening (page 27, section 6C).
  3. The remaining teams in the event (teams who have not been eliminated in bracket play) will be ranked according to their final overall pool seed.
    • If there are 8 teams remaining, whoever was seeded the highest of those teams in pool play will be awarded 1st Whoever was seeded lowest will be awarded 8th.
    • In the event where a remaining team has advanced further in the bracket than another team (I.e, A quarterfinal game was completed, and a team advanced to the semi-finals, while all other teams have not completed their quarterfinal game), teams will be ranked according to their final pool seed taking into account the lowest possible finish for the team who advanced.
    • In the example above, the team who advanced to the semi-final can finish no lower than 4th place if the event was completed in its entirety. Therefore, when placement is complete, this team will be awarded no less than 4th place depending on their seed. (I.e., If they were the 7th seed out of 7 remaining teams, they would be awarded a tie for 4th If they were the 2nd seed out of 7 remaining teams, they would be awarded 2nd place.)
  4. In the case of a double elimination bracket, all teams in the winner’s bracket are seeded ahead of the loser’s bracket.

NEW AWARDS POLICY:

When we are unable to complete pool play as scheduled due to weather conditions we will finalize team placements according to the automatic calculations on the USSSA website, solely for the purpose of awarding USSSA points. We understand the importance of teams earning credit for their participation, even under challenging circumstances.

However, because the event does not reach a level of completion that reflects a fair and competitive environment we will not be issuing awards for any tournament that does not have all teams completing pool play. We believe this approach best maintains the integrity and spirit of competition.

This will be our standard policy moving forward for any events in which pool play is not completed.

We appreciate your understanding and your continued support. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
